We had our European project supervisors visit us for a monitoring visit. The ideal opportunity for taking a moment to take stock of the project.
We took the opportunity to visit VIVAQUA’s custom overflow Paruck. During heavy rainfall, the (unseparated) sewage system often overflows, causing excess sewage to be discharged into the River Senne. A mobile wall in the collector in the sewer now ensures that this amount is significantly reduced. This mobile wall rises with the water level, which also allows for better collection of large waste afterwards.
Initial figures show that thanks to this modification, the overflow volume to the River Senne decreased by as much as 54% and the frequency of overflows decreased by as much as 60%. This is tremendously good news for the water quality of the River Senne. The less dirty water it has to swallow, the better, of course. Moreover, with the modification of the overflow at the Molenbeek (2025-2026), an additional improvement can be expected. The achievement of this measure also nicely demonstrates the concrete impact of the project.
After this inspiring visit, the various partners briefly went over the status of their actions. With the end of the project (2026) gradually approaching, the ideal time to have a quick feedback with our supervisors about feasibility and any necessary adjustments. Finally, we were asked to host an umbrella event next year with the various other LIFE IP programmes. But we’ll have more to say about that soon…
