The water quality in the project area is influenced by various contaminants, originating from households, industry, agriculture and transport. A number of actions within the project focus on an approach that targets these sources.
Over the past few decades, numerous waterways have been straightened, enclosed by levees or partly led through cased piping. Through specific actions, we aim to improve or reinstate the natural conditions. This allows water-related nature the opportunity to redevelop.
We examine the extent to which the actions contribute to achieving the goals specified in the Water Framework Directive (WFD).
Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia are each independently and equally responsible for the implementation of the Water Framework Directive. A better collaboration between the regions will lead to better results.
